One of the area's loveliest attractions, the 55-acre Butchart Gardens was established in 1904. The Butchart
Gardens had its beginning when Jenny Butchart worked to reclaim an exhausted
limestone quarry owned by her husband. Now a National Historic Site of Canada,
The Gardens draws close to 1 million visitor each year.
The Gardens is in uninterrupted bloom from March through October and visitors
can enjoy over 700 different varieties of bedding plants, plus hundreds of
shrubs and trees. In the July and August, there is afternoon and evening
entertainment and exciting fireworks each Saturday night. Autumn brings
beautiful views coloured in russets and browns. During the December holidays,
the gardens are aglow with 'The Magic of Christmas' displays, entertainment and
an open air ice skating rink. Winter has its own majesty: This is the time of
year to see the background shrubs and trees of summer standing out more
prominently in the various gardens. And the Spring Prelude indoor display with
its Koi pond and flower lined pathways offers an early taste of Spring.
